This session will present examples of contextual curriculum development through open-ended inquiry, based on the interests of students, teachers, families, and communities. One example will be shared in-depth, to tell the story of how children’s inquiry into their neighborhood served as a catalyst for bridging separations between faith communities, and deeply engaging families in curriculum. All examples were developed in various schools, both public and private, in Boulder and Denver, Colorado, in partnership with the Boulder Journey School Teacher Education Program. Inspired by the Infant-Toddler Centers and Preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, this workshop will employ “teacher as researcher” as a lens through which to share stories, resources, and time for interactive discussion and reflection. The presentation and discussion will focus on developing sustainable 21st century practices around family engagement, community connection, and intercultural exploration.
